Project Details

  • Client: Monarch Education Furniture
  • Original: Multiple spreadsheets
  • Solution: Web Application - Production Planning
  • Project Duration: 3 months
  • Client Website: www.monarchuk.com

The Challenge

Our client relied on three main spreadsheets to manage their workload. The transport spreadsheet acted as the main controller, while the production planning and metalwork spreadsheets were linked to it. These spreadsheets had a variety of macros that performed various functions behind the scenes, including interactions with SAGE 200. Some of these macros were no longer used, and others had unknown functions. The three spreadsheets were essential in planning both transport and production. Once an order came in, the transport was allocated, and production planning was figured out by working backward from the delivery date, which was a time-consuming process.

The Desired Outcome

After a thorough discussion, it was decided that the client needed a comprehensive solution that could efficiently merge the three spreadsheets mentioned earlier into a resilient and user-friendly system that would be easy to maintain. This system needed to be capable of accommodating multiple users and tracking any changes. The system also needed to be reliable for long-term use as many business areas relied on production planning.

The Solution

Having the project requirements in mind, it was decided that creating a web application with an SQL database in the backend would be the best solution. The database would consolidate data from various sources, ensuring data accuracy and consistency in a single source of truth. The web application, on the other hand, would allow authorised users to manage the data stored in the database. We focused on creating business logic that would automate manual processes (such as production capacity calculation) and mitigate the risk of manual errors.

The Impact

By creating a web application connected to an SQL database, Monarch's teams have realised the following benefits:

  • Rapid production - users can now plan production capacity for any given day, with information being immediately shared with the relevant team members.
  • Accuracy - users do not need to worry about manual errors or inconsistency. Users can also print tick sheets, which help with maintaining the workload on a given day.
  • Flexibility - users can add new entries for users, drivers, and the factory roster, which are automatically added to the flow of the system.
